Summary:

Global Nonwovens (GNW) has an opening for an R&E Technical Director to provide technical leadership, strategic direction, and program execution in wide ranging nonwoven technologies to support K-C’s business strategies, innovation & growth plans, and cost transformation. This R&E Technical Director role within Global Nonwovens will have a breadth of technical leadership responsibilities including the guidance of technical programs in support of materials science, process development of new and existing nonwoven technologies, and intellectual asset management for technology adoption across all K-C’s businesses, brands and regions. This position will interface with colleagues across GNW as well as global partners in KCNA, KCI, KCP, CR&E and external partners in academia, government, industry, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Role Purpose/Scope

Provide technical leadership, expertise, and strategic vision by influencing the application of nonwovens technology within the corporation, encouraging the acquisition or development of new technologies, and by identifying/conceiving and driving development of innovative and novel nonwovens substrates and/or technologies that have the potential to add substantial competitive advantage for current product forms.

Primary Responsibilities

Innovation

  • Drive and execute overall technology strategy working in partnership with GNW leadership and BU stakeholders to enable:
    • Material and process migration plans aligned with BU product migration plans
    • Inform sustainable GNW asset strategy
  • Seek and establish connections between various internal and external technical developments to create and drive new and more disruptive innovation opportunities
  • Set the standard for protection of technologies, processes, materials, and products through appropriate use of patents and trade secrets. Engage with legal and licensing teams to establish technology partnerships, JDAs, and licensing opportunities that can drive innovation and/or generate revenue
  • Bring an innovation mindset to research & development in GNW

Customer Confidence

  • Understand high priority/high opportunity business needs across the sectors and translate into high impact nonwoven related technology programs to drive top line and margin growth
  • Build connections between GNW technology projects and business opportunities to drive greater alignment and accelerated execution & learning.
  • Uncover/anticipate unmet business needs that may drive new GNW technology development programs
  • Lead complex science and technology development projects which may span the range from conception through initial stages of commercialization with Business Unit (BU) partners.
  • Build strong relationships with other KC Technical Directors and influence/partner on overall KC technical strategy

 

Supply Chain

  • Partner with GNW (Product Supply, Capital Engineering, Strategy) and BU’s to ensure the GNW global asset base delivers sustainable competitive advantage
  • Drive collaboration and innovation across GNW in order to deliver breakthrough technologies for K-C’s businesses.
  • Work in concert with GPO to vet out technical and innovation capabilities of strategic suppliers.

Organizational Capability

  • Provide technical and strategic guidance to Nonwoven Technology Platform Teams and ensures yearly updates of technology platform strategies
  • Proactively identifies and grows the next generation of Technical Leaders by identifying career development opportunities that provide exposure across the organization and growth of skills.
  • Provide technical and strategic input/influence to project gate and portfolio decisions and advise project/program leaders to be more effective in execution and delivery of results, seeking out “red’ projects and leaning in to understand and advise corrective actions

Candidates should have extensive scientific/engineering experiences and notable accomplishments across technologies important to GNW with the ability to help set strategic direction for the department as well as create and drive major, complex science and technology initiatives. The successful candidate will be an accomplished leader with the ability to work at the front end of science and technology development, but just as importantly will have a demonstrated ability to drive and implement technical projects towards commercial realization through strong collaborative interaction with diverse business functions.
A strong track record in creating technology programs while working with external technology partners is crucial including universities, suppliers, government laboratories, and industry consortiums. Mentoring and coaching junior scientists and influencing management are also key skills for this R&E Technical Director role. Candidate needs to be a “leader of leaders” with the ability to provide project work direction to senior technical employees.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must possess an advanced degree in a major scientific or engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Broad and deep knowledge of nonwoven technologies and minimum of 15 years of experience in application of nonwoven materials, processes, raw materials and BU product applications

Summary of Position:

 

Lead the Baby & Child Care Materials and Global Absorbent Technology Development R&E team to partner with the Product and Process Development teams and the Global BCC teams to develop, prioritize, and transform BCC products via the development of advantaged materials and absorbent structure designs into a global pipeline of innovation for each key BCC Platform (POME, Active Baby Open Diapers, Wipes, Diaper Pants, GoodNites, Pull Ups, Snug & Dry Open Diapers).  This team is responsible for partnering with Global NonWovens and our external suppliers to develop the materials and the absorbent structure to deliver against the ideal consumer experience and then leading the R&E team to deliver materials and absorbent structure designs for each of the platforms.

 

This position is responsible for development beginning with needs briefs through commercialization working with Product Supply. Significant collaboration is required with Global Nonwovens, Corporate Research and Engineering, BCC Product Development, BCC Process Development and External material suppliers of nonwovens and superabsorbents as well as all other material suppliers. The role needs to deliver a materials development plan from current to the 10 year horizon to provide both advantaged functionality, appropriate claims and cost.

Purpose of the Role:

Provide engineering and manufacturing operations leadership to support the delivery of $500MM net sales by 2020 and $2B by 2025 at targeted costs. Ensure FDA/Global regulatory approvals, and commercial supply of the Sofusa™ combination product for multiple drug candidates.

 

Role Accountabilities:

 

  • Deliver a Continuous Supply of Sofusa™ Combination Products

The first function is a newly organized pain management technology center of excellence. Primary scope of duties and responsibilities includes the following:

• Lead the establishment of a Pain Management focused Technology Development center of excellence for Halyard. Drive the implementation of new technology to solve clinical needs. Research and evaluate emerging technologies and execute strategic technology planning centered on pain management.
• Drive the development and establishment of advanced research & technology development processes, practices and SOP’s.

  8.     Develop and maintain data bases on current and future (forecast) internal usage and prices/costs for all items within the assigned categories.
  9.     Identify and recommend cost savings opportunities identified by the analysis of both the internal and market data
  10.       Locate data and complete templates for category strategy review according to pre-set schedule
  11.       Communicate learnings to Commodity Managers
  12.     Attend key meetings with business units to explain and message the analysis
  13.     Perform market research
  14.     Locate and perform analysis on market and industry data
  15.     Maintain knowledge base of industry trends, market research and analytic tools
  16.     Support Commodity Managers in research and selection of sources of supply for sourcing events to ensure that the requirements of the category are met with the optimum quality, service, and cost to use
  17.     Analyze market and supply dynamics related to supplier proposals to develop a matrix of negotiation scenarios. Engage sourcing team to align on acceptable negotiation outcomes.
  18.     Monitor and report performance indicators; perform data validation to ensure accuracy and functionality in assigned areas of responsibility, investigate and initiate corrective action as required.
  19.     Challenge existing practices and make recommendations concerning improvements to standardizing and streamlining processes, improving team effectiveness, provide information for managerial decision making, and organize data to fulfill support requirements.
  20.     Maintain knowledge about the markets and how they affect price, availability, or supply chain logistics for assigned commodities and provide market analysis to stakeholders as required.
  21.     Contribute to an environment in which all team members are respected regardless of their individual differences and are motivated to improve both their individual and team contributions to achieve desired business results.
  22.     Communicate fully with superiors, colleagues and subordinates and work effectively in a team environment.  Be informative and communicate in a way that is timely, complete, accurate and clear.

Basic Qualifications:

-A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Supply Chain, or related discipline

-Normally 5 or more years of relevant experience (e.g. financial analyst, research analyst, business planning, consultant).

– High level of analytical ability to drive insight from data analysis

-High proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint, and ability to use them as tools to communicate analysis

-Experience building complex cost models from grounds-up

-Experience in analyzing and/or improving global supply chain and value chain

-Strong Presentation, project management, process improvement, and communication skills

-Ability to operate with limited direction. Possess knowledge and experience in relevant purchasing commodity group.

-Advanced stakeholder management.  Executive presence/facilitation skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

-Experience in analyzing global industry supply vs. demand and how this influences pricing

-2+ years’ experience with consulting firm; preferably in analytic role or equivalent experience or an advanced degree – MBA/Finance.

-Relevant experience in strategic sourcing or supply chain management

-Ability to drive insight from data analysis and skills in hypothesis building, advanced cost modeling, and regression analysis

-Problem solving experience in reducing total costs

-Ability to influencing others, manage change, lead cross-functional teams

-Six Sigma and Lean training
