Scope- Front End Innovation and Pilot facilities

Global Nonwovens (GNW) has an opening for an R&E Director to provide leadership, strategic direction and delivery of high value technical and material solutions to support K-C’s business strategies, innovation & growth plans, and cost transformation. This R&E Director role has responsibility for the Front End Innovation (FEI) portfolio in addition to the pilot facilities which provides nonwoven prototyping services to all of K-C. This role also provides leadership to key GNW subject matter experts in support of sector innovation and cost transformation goals. This position will interface with colleagues across GNW as well as global partners in KCNA, KCI, KCP, and CR&E and external partners in academia, government, industry and non-government organizations (NGOs). It is expected that the candidate will have relevant experience in nonwovens process and materials development.

Role Purpose/Scope

Provide leadership and strategic vision to develop and maintain a healthy FEI portfolio resulting in delivery of high value technical and material solution options to the BU IMF Teams, driving operational efficiency and new technologies in the pilot facilities to safely provide prototyping capabilities to all customers, and develop/coach both technical and management leadership to deliver a sustainable pipeline of talent for the future.

Primary Responsibilities

Innovation

  • Develop a healthy FEI pipeline working in partnership with GNW leadership and BU stakeholders to provide:
    • A portfolio that is aligned with BU innovation needs
    • Delivery of high value technical and material solution options to the BU IMF portfolios
    • FEI portfolio visibility to GNW, CR&E and BU’s Senior Leadership
  • Establish and grow connections across the BU R&E teams to provide clear direction on current innovation needs and longer term disruptive innovation opportunities
  • Ensure pilot facility provides a safe environment for customers and drive strategy for near/longer term innovation capabilities

Customer Confidence

  • Ensure the FEI portfolio is connected to the BU stated consumer needs and clearly indicates the benefits with key milestones including timing and cost
  • Establish a network across the BU’s, GNW, CR&E, Legal, and procurement
  • Establish a pipeline of projects that anticipate BU unmet needs

Supply Chain

  • Work with GNW and BU’s to ensure there is a portfolio of projects to deliver sustainable competitive advantage across the GNW asset base
  • Drive collaboration with the regions and GPO to understand global innovation capabilities

Organizational Capability

  • Lead by example in Safety and LEAN/Continuous Improvement
  • Ensure that all elements of the Corporate Human Resources Development and Diversity policy are fully implemented

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Establish efficient administrative procedures and support, then work to continually improve them.  Procedures include establishing and controlling approved budgets, setting up and implementing control systems, and any other procedures that assure that the groups operate within corporate policies and guidelines.

Qualifications/Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in a science or engineering discipline with advanced degree preferred.
  • Extensive and broad managerial experience in R&E, manufacturing or other technical function with demonstrated results.  Prefer a candidate with converting experience.
  • Experience should include close working relationships with the business, Marketing, Product Supply and Sourcing and Supply Management functions.

Work in collaboration with the Corporate Strategy Execution Office to assist in the training of project leads on the necessary skill sets and move the R&D organization’s project management practices along a project management maturity model.

Position Purpose:

Summary of Position:

 

Lead the Baby & Child Care Research and Engineering Global Front End Innovation Team to partner with Marketing to develop, prioritize and transform the ideal consumer experience into a global pipeline of innovation for each key BCC Platform (POME, Active Baby Open Diapers, Wipes, Diaper Pants, GoodNites, Pull Ups, Domain Expansion, Snug & Dry Open Diapers).

 

Responsible for partnering with Marketing Leadership to develop the ideal experience and then leading the R&E organization to transform this experience into a product model and then back-cast this into a pipeline of innovation for the platform.  Accountable for working with other technical leaders to identify inventions and development needed to deliver the products in the back-casted pipeline.  Integrate benefit and cost innovation to deliver the best consumer experience.  Accountable for the development of the products in the pipeline through the BFE stage and readiness for BFI.

 

Responsible for all inventions being complete before BFI and delivering a working prototype which enables a small size consumer concept & use test that demonstrates the purchase intent required to deliver the business build needed for the sustained business growth.  Significant collaboration is required with global brand, MRA, D&C, Design, and CR&E team members. Deliver demonstrated innovation and product designs for the 3-10 year horizon.

Basic Requirements:

•           Bachelors Degree in science or engineering,

•           Generally 15+ years experience in increasingly broader technical or operational roles with demonstrated track record of achievement and growth in leadership.

•           Previous successful high level R&D management experience, Extensive managerial experience in a research or other technical function with demonstrated results and strength in leadership

•           Experience in working in front end innovation desired or the ability to think outside of the box and comfort with working in less defined space
