Scope- Front End Innovation and Pilot facilities

Global Nonwovens (GNW) has an opening for an R&E Director to provide leadership, strategic direction and delivery of high value technical and material solutions to support K-C’s business strategies, innovation & growth plans, and cost transformation. This R&E Director role has responsibility for the Front End Innovation (FEI) portfolio in addition to the pilot facilities which provides nonwoven prototyping services to all of K-C. This role also provides leadership to key GNW subject matter experts in support of sector innovation and cost transformation goals. This position will interface with colleagues across GNW as well as global partners in KCNA, KCI, KCP, and CR&E and external partners in academia, government, industry and non-government organizations (NGOs). It is expected that the candidate will have relevant experience in nonwovens process and materials development.

Role Purpose/Scope

Provide leadership and strategic vision to develop and maintain a healthy FEI portfolio resulting in delivery of high value technical and material solution options to the BU IMF Teams, driving operational efficiency and new technologies in the pilot facilities to safely provide prototyping capabilities to all customers, and develop/coach both technical and management leadership to deliver a sustainable pipeline of talent for the future.

Primary Responsibilities

Innovation

  • Develop a healthy FEI pipeline working in partnership with GNW leadership and BU stakeholders to provide:
    • A portfolio that is aligned with BU innovation needs
    • Delivery of high value technical and material solution options to the BU IMF portfolios
    • FEI portfolio visibility to GNW, CR&E and BU’s Senior Leadership
  • Establish and grow connections across the BU R&E teams to provide clear direction on current innovation needs and longer term disruptive innovation opportunities
  • Ensure pilot facility provides a safe environment for customers and drive strategy for near/longer term innovation capabilities

Customer Confidence

  • Ensure the FEI portfolio is connected to the BU stated consumer needs and clearly indicates the benefits with key milestones including timing and cost
  • Establish a network across the BU’s, GNW, CR&E, Legal, and procurement
  • Establish a pipeline of projects that anticipate BU unmet needs

Supply Chain

  • Work with GNW and BU’s to ensure there is a portfolio of projects to deliver sustainable competitive advantage across the GNW asset base
  • Drive collaboration with the regions and GPO to understand global innovation capabilities

Organizational Capability

  • Lead by example in Safety and LEAN/Continuous Improvement

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Establish efficient administrative procedures and support, then work to continually improve them.  Procedures include establishing and controlling approved budgets, setting up and implementing control systems, and any other procedures that assure that the groups operate within corporate policies and guidelines.

Qualifications/Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in a science or engineering discipline with advanced degree preferred.
  • Extensive and broad managerial experience in R&E, manufacturing or other technical function with demonstrated results.  Prefer a candidate with converting experience.
  • Experience should include close working relationships with the business, Marketing, Product Supply and Sourcing and Supply Management functions.

Summary of Position:

This position is responsible for development beginning with needs briefs through commercialization working with Product Supply. Significant collaboration is required with Global Nonwovens, Corporate Research and Engineering, BCC Product Development, BCC Process Development and External material suppliers of nonwovens and superabsorbents as well as all other material suppliers. The role needs to deliver a materials development plan from current to the 10 year horizon to provide both advantaged functionality, appropriate claims and cost.

The incumbent reports to the L4 Baby & Child Care R&E leader.

  •         Direct reports include: Sr. R&E Managers, Technical Leaders, and Project Leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Lead Global Absorbent Development and Material Development R&E resources to develop a pipeline of advantaged absorbent structures and materials to provide preferred consumer experiences, claims and/or advantaged cost for BCC absorbent products.
  • Deploy Global Absorbent Development and Material Development R&E resources to deliver 0-10 year pipeline of material and absorbent structure innovation for priority platforms and commercialize while working with Product Supply.

• Support the strategic planning and R&D budgeting process and measure and monitor R&D effectiveness across the organization through the use of key R&D product, performance and process metrics. • Continuously improve company’s organizational capabilities to achieve process quality as part of project execution, including an awareness of the need to “do it right the first time.”
Own the global design & drafting organization that includes capabilities in industrial design and the integration of human factors. Manages the organization and ensures continuous improvement in the capabilities around human centered design and overall service level.

SUMMARY OF POSITION: (Mission)

Lead the North America Front End Innovation and Development & Commercialization Research and Engineering team to develop, prioritize and transform Insights for all Family Care Categories (Intimate Care, Household Care and Hands & Face) into innovative user/shopper solutions and commercialize these solutions in the marketplace.

This role has the responsibility to develop a prioritized portfolio of solutions for the three Family Care Categories by gaining consumer insights, developing concepts, and commercializing products well aligned with our technology capabilities and in close collaboration with Marketing and other cross-functional partners.

Ongoing management of technical resources in partnership with the Technology Development, Packaging, Legal, Global Consumer Teams, Product Supply and the Business Team to meet cost, productivity and brand equity objectives of commercialized solutions is required.

This position must also lead the establishment of mid- & long-term Innovation Pathways for the three categories and the associated Technology Development Pathways.  In addition, collaboration and strategic program direction is provided to other R&E organizations such as:  Corporate R&E, Packaging, Innovation Design, and the Global Sector Teams.
